Counseling for College Students
College is an exciting and challenging time in life! The transition to college represents the first time most will live outside their parents' home and away from their childhood friends and community. It can be difficult to take on the additional life responsibilities associated with "living on your own."
Then there's the academic work, and picking a major, and thinking about a profession! The pressure to adapt to higher academic standards and to choose the "right" path can feel overwhelming.
Additionally, college is a time of substantial growth in identity. College students are exposed to new ideas and value systems both inside and outside the classroom which may be challenging to reconcile when compared to the norms experienced with families and communities of origin.
In short, college is a period of rapid change and growth. It is a time where you will make both good decisions, and bad ones. It is a time when having a counselor to help navigate life can be really helpful.
I have worked with college students dealing with:
-
Depression and Anxiety
-
Academic issues / Navigating Accommodations
-
Fitting in or feeling pressured
-
Drug & alcohol abuse
-
Picking a major / Career concerns
-
Grief & trauma
-
Relationship difficulties
-
Sexual orientation or identity issues
My personal and professional experience in the college setting is extensive. My practicum and internship for my Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling was completed at Savannah College of Art and Design in Atlanta and I have consistently worked with college students in my private practice. Personally, I have three college degrees, my counseling masters from Georgia State, a MBA from William & Mary and a bachelor's degree from Hampden-Sydney College.
